Ulbricht had moved a few thousand dollars over 2 years. On the other hand, there was a firehose of money coming from Mt. Gox through Dwolla. Mutem Sigellum (Karepeles' holding company) had a transaction list 1000 pages long. The website leveraged the Tor networking protocol using anonymous transactions and Bitcoin to pay for merchandise. Bitcoin has remained tainted with this reputation even after the FBI closed down the Silk Road in 2013 and seized 26,000 BTC from its founder Ross Ulbricht.

First, we were shocked to learn that the infamous Dread Pirate Roberts, Ross William Ulbricht (admin for The Silk Road, the largest underground black market on the deep web) had been arrested and The Silk Road had been seized by the feds. The FBI argument was 'leaky CAPTCHA'. The defense argument was that the application was hacked. The most likely scenario is an info leak or debug page as Ross was known to live edit/debug the application. This evidence wasn't tested in court on 4th amendment grounds since the defense didn't demonstrate ownership of the server: Ross Ulbricht, creator and administrator of the infamous Silk Road website, was sentenced by a court to two life sentences. The minimum term that he could count on as a major drug dealer is 20 years. But he was found guilty on seven counts, including both drug dealing and money laundering.
Ross Ulbricht, the person, was an active participant in the mises.org website and the BitcoinTalk forums. In both cases he was deeply committed to the “Austrian School of Economics”, something the Dread Pirate Roberts was also a huge fan of.
